Gas Tank Options

I have a nice 67 Marlin that I'm trying to sell, but the gas tank leaks. I tried to repair, but nothing holds.

I'm a drag racer (www.ScreaminWoody.com) and talked to a couple of Buds who race AMCs, and one claims that recently someone repopped a tank for the car, without the neck. I've searched everywhere but can't find that.

Unless someone here can give me a better plan, my options are:

1. A universal Mustang tank, which you cut a hole in the trunk floor to drop tank in, and it and its oversize flanges become the truck floor after welding in. You have to open the trunk to fill as the filler tube is at center/rear next to the header panel. I'd have to also but the sender with proper ohm range (what is it?) to make gauge work.

2. I found an Olds Cutlass repop at about the same dimensions, but the rear roller would have to be welded up and a side filler To be welded in. I doubt the existing sender would work and haven't researched it. I also haven't fully looked at the challenges of getting that right.

Just strap a fuel cell in it and let the next guy figure it out.

Please tell me there's a better way to do this as I have to imagine I'm not the only one to have a 67 Ambassador/Marlin with a bad gas tank.

I'd been to everyone of those links, AMC groups on Facebook and a AMC forum. The best answers were no one repops, there's no direct fit from anything else, and best option is a used one from salvage. I don't need to pay a lot of money for one no better than the one I have.

What I'm doing is getting a 16 Gal. 65-68 Mustang drop in with a 3" neck and billet cap.



If my car wasn't a Fastback I could have drilled a hole in rear panel mount a outside filler, and gotten a tank with a 6" Rubber neck to tie into filler, but as you see, that won't work.





I also bought a low profile floatless sender.



I'll take trunk floor to bare metal, cut a clean hole to drop tank in - where it becomes the new trunk floor, prime, spatter paint, clear, and trim the trunk carpet around the filler neck.
