  • Street racing; The forgotten starting line

    ST,

Yep, been there done that. What street racing is today is far from what we did back in the day. We thought 13 second cars were 10 second cars and they didn't have enough brake system
to stop like they should have at that. With today's perfomance in acceleration and braking cars are deffinantly more effective... All this said, I belieave street racing is way more dangerous today than it was when I was, and it should be taken to the track.

Have not, will never. Too many examples of lives ruined for me to ever consider it.

Did it when young. Stopped in the 90s when a Viper and a Vette wrecked on Westheimer, killed one and the other going to jail for Involuntary Manslaughter for being involved in race.

The Street racing you see on TV is on Closed roads with fire and ambulance. Should be called No Prep Racing. I prefer my 9-second car on the track that's prepped, as I'm small tire and too old and too broke for the higher risk of wreck.

If I still raced, I'd be right there with you, BK.

To me, watching only encourages the practice.

I confess that I have street raced many times in the past and I don't condone it at all. Back then it seemed I didn't have so much to lose and I made some needed money with my totally street legal 10 second road runner. People around here still want a piece of the car on the street but I have grown up some and turn back the temptations.

I also illegally street raced 45 years ago when I was young, dumb and in the 11's. When started impounding cars if caught I stopped. Couldn't stand the idea of paying a lawyer to get my car back, then the court gas a hand out as well. Now it's a low 9 second streeter and should go into the 8's next season. I street raced a lot when really young. Probably quit when I was 23-24 around 1976. High 12 second car. Won a lot of races but never lost any money. I never bet on the race as I didn't have the money to bet with.

In the 70's I went to the burger joint hang outs with my 65 Belvedere and street raced locally. Then we would sometimes go to the big money street races on the Conduit in Brooklyn NY,Fountain Ave and Connecting Highways. There were some big dogs that races for tens of thousands and we were just spectators. The entire 1/4 mile was lined with people 4 to 6 deep!
